I will be the gladdest thing
Under the sun!
I will touch a hundred flowers
And not pick one.– Edna St. Vincent Millay, from "Afternoon on a Hill"
The image of the flower has remained an iconographic tradition throughout the history of art and culture, from ancient depictions to contemporary art. Botanical elements, floral blooms and various flowers appear in literature, decorative arts and across all art movements.
The natural beauty of flowers has consistently stood the test of time, and our emotional attachment to a flower’s cultural, symbolic and aesthetic value is why we repeatedly find floral images throughout literary and visual culture. With this exhibit, diverse constructs of the flower in objects from our permanent collection, punctuated by poetic verse, present a cheerful botanical theme.
