The Rise and Fall of the Port of Hudson

An Illustrated Timeline & Whaling Stories of Black Mariners, Perils at Sea, Moby Dick

This Columbia County Historical Society exhibit features an immersive, illustrated timeline from the 1600’s to the present day bringing to life the historical context of whaling and its impact on the development of City of Hudson. Also featured are informative panels highlighting Black Mariners, the Maritime Underground Railroad, infamous voyages of Hudson Whaleships including Barbary Pirates, Shipwrecks, Marooned Whalers and more. The exhibit highlights details of life aboard a whaleship as well as local ties to the Essex tragedy which inspired Herman Melville when writing Moby Dick.
